Ski Trip!!!!!!!!

On 19 August, the Moa Team will be going on a ski trip to Mount Hutt. The cost for this trip will be $49.00 plus $17.00 for the bus. This price includes ski rental, lift ticket, and lesson. I would like to point out that additional gear the children will need such as waterproof pants, glove and sunglasses or goggles cannot be rented from Mount Hutt. There are ski rental offices in Yaldhurst Road at the Shell station and closer to Riccarton.

The students have the choice of either alpine skiing or snowboarding but they need to be careful with their choice. Unfortunately they won't be able to change their activity when we get to the mountain, so if they are finding snowboarding more difficult than they thought, they cannot strap on a pair of skis. The cost for sking and snowboarding is the same.

Parents are more than welcome to come along to help out. We have a wide range of skills amongst our students, from first-time novices to A-grade skiers.

The children will have to go up on the bus, and there ought to be room for several adults as well. Parents are welcome to take their own vehicles. The children will need to be at school at 7.15 AM.

I'm sure the children are really looking forward to this, and we will work to make sure that it all goes as seamlessly as possible.

The term has begun!

Hello,

Welcome to Learning Community One's blog, coming to you straight from West Melton School. I hope all have enjoyed their holidays, and the first week of school. As many of you know, there have been a few changes to LC1 since last term. First and foremost, I'd like to introduce myself to you, especially for those of you I haven't yet had the chance to meet. My name is Bradly "Mr." Hill, and I am your child's new teacher for the rest of the year. I'm very excited about this class, and see loads of potential and ability in each and every student.

This is my first teaching position in New Zealand, having just graduated from the graduate programme at the College of Education in here in Christchurch. Prior to coming to New Zealand, I taught the equivalent of New Entrants in the United States and taught English as a foreign language in Morocco and South Korea.

My goals for the class for the remainder of the year are to strengthen what your children are capable of and extending their abilities in reading, maths, and writing. We will also have ample opportunity to explore performing arts with our inquiry unit this term, culminating in two productions at the end of the term.

This will be a very busy term for us in LC1. In addition to our academic activities, we also have the zones tournament for winter sport in early August, a ski trip planned for 19 August, and the productions scheduled for September.

My plan s for this blog are to keep you updated on what we are doing here in LC1 and allowing the children to publish their work if they choose to.

If you have any specific questions, concerns or general inquiries, please feel free to contact me here at school or via email, which is bradly@westmelton.school.nz.

Kind regards,
Bradly Hill
